New life (Epiphany +3B)

The obvious theme from this week’s Scriptures is leaving an old life behind. It’s interesting to see that only in the Gospel do we pick up something new when Jesus tells the disciples they will “fish for people,” which we take to mean become evangelists who will bring people into the faith. We could go with the traditional artistic interpretation, as well, with Jesus on the shore as Simon Peter and Andrew cast their net into the lake, pull fish up or leave the nets behind.

Let’s focus instead on the new life, the unknown they were willing to enter because Jesus proclaimed “repent, and believe in the good news.” Imagine today is your day of repentance. What are you leaving behind? What are you picking up? How do you envision your new life with Jesus?
