Attachment (Proper 23B)

“Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” a rich man, who has followed all the commandments since his youth, asks Jesus.

Jesus responds that he lacks one thing and tells him to give his money to the poor and follow him. What is this that he lacks? The man is too attached to his possessions to leave them behind. So we read the passage and think “I’m not so attached to my stuff I wouldn’t leave it for Jesus!”

Not all stuff or all attachment is bad, but overattachment to stuff is – you know the person so attached to their “toys,” technology, sports, or TV that they spend all their time playing with them and never connect to people. So ask yourself what your attachment is, what you spend most of your time with, and then go without it for a week.

In the time you would normally spend on that, you’re going to volunteer to help people and/or spend time trying spiritual disciplines. When the week is over, you may find you’re not so attached anymore and the practices become a part of your life.
