First of all (Proper 26B)

“… this is much more important than all whole burnt offerings and sacrifices,” a scribe tells Jesus as they discuss the “first of all” commandments. I start here because many centuries have focused on Jesus as the great sacrifice for our sins. But more important than that is to love God with all of your heart, soul, mind and strength and to love your neighbor as yourself.

In recent decades these has been debate over the question of how you can love your neighbor as yourself when you don’t love yourself. Instead of doing nothing we’re going to look at it as loving your neighbor as you want to be loved.

Take out a piece of paper and write down things people or God have done to show you love, things you wish people had done and things you’ve done for another. Just keep your hand moving for 10 minutes. Set the paper aside and go for a silent walk or sit in silence for another 10 minutes. Then you’re going to decorate a heart that you’ll cut out.

Once your heart is done re-read what you wrote. After the walk or sitting and heart decoration, you should see your writing a little differently. Select a few words or phrases and create a background of text for you heart, then glue your heart onto the page.

Now go and share your love with your neighbors.
