Recognizing Jesus (Advent 4C)

We’re told in Luke when Elizabeth hears Mary’s greeting that the unborn John the Baptist “leapt in her womb” because John somehow recognized Jesus in Mary’s womb. Then Elizabeth is filled with the Holy Spirit and blesses Mary, who responds with the magnificat.

Yet what does that mean for us? How do we recognize Jesus within each other? Let’s start by recognizing Jesus within ourselves. Take out a piece of paper and write down the qualities of Jesus that resonate with you. Think about your favorite stories of Jesus, then ask what it is you like about Jesus in those stories. Those qualities are probably ones that you share with Jesus or ones you wish to nurture in yourself.

Once you’ve seen Jesus in you, it should be easier to see Jesus in others.
