This week’s post is going to be a little different because the lectionary this week can be summed up in one word: comfort. But yesterday, two bombs exploded at the end of the Boston Marathon and I realize that many clergy will try to provide answers and comfort that comes up empty for people asking “why?”
I invite you to pray with the news. Take a photo from your newspaper or print one from online and sit with it for a moment in silence. Don’t worry about putting words to the prayer, just open yourself to communicating with God. Pray with all of your heart, soul, mind and strength for all of those injured – physically, emotionally and spiritually – as well as those who died and their family and friends. Then, if you want, do the same with another photo. Maybe photos of those who died when they are released.
When you’re ready, assemble a collage of the images and text. Use the headlines, but also find where people helped each other in the immediate aftermath. Feel free to add your own words – even if it’s just one big WHY? in thick black letters.
BONUS: I’ve been playing with paper dolls a bit lately and wanted to provide a link to a Paper Doll School, who drew a doll in honor of the Boston Marathon bombing.
